How Does Aspartame Affect the Body?

Is Aspartame a Neurotoxin?
The question of whether aspartame is a *neurotoxin* is frequently raised online. However, describing aspartame as a proven neurotoxin is not supported by the current consensus of major food-safety assessments.

This means that claims that aspartame definitively "damages the gut" or causes "gut dysbiosis" go beyond what current evidence can reliably demonstrate.
Should You Avoid Aspartame?
For most people, consuming aspartame within the established acceptable daily intake is considered safe by food-safety authorities. However, individual dietary choices are personal, and some people may prefer to limit artificial sweeteners as part of a broader approach to reducing ultra-processed foods or developing a preference for less sweet flavours.
The best approach is to consider the whole diet rather than focusing on a single ingredient. A balanced diet based largely on vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, pulses and other minimally processed foods remains an important foundation for health.
